This has to be the best email I’ve ever received. It’s something straight out of the South Park episode ‘Whale Whores’, which everyone should watch by the way. I want to say this email is a hoax but I think it’s one of those things that’s just so outrageous it has to be real. I hope this isn’t representative of how too many Japanese people feel.

European officials warned on Friday that cod, of the fish and chips fame, is on the verge of disappearing from key European fishing grounds. They said a ten-percent cut is required to the 2010 catch as the estimated stocks of the fish are a mere one-fifth of what they were forty years ago.

History has a lesson for us in these matters. Almost twenty-years ago overfishing in Canada’s Atlantic provinces led to a moratorium on cod fishing and the destruction of over 40,000 jobs. The marine system was damaged so extensively that the numbers of cod still haven’t begun to rise. Although Newfoundland has decided to re-allow cod fishing off their coast for the first time in decades. [1]

Fisheries are considered to be a renewable resource but marine systems around the world are often so poorly managed that it regularly fails to work out that way.

Chris Packham, host of a BBC nature show, recently created an international stir when he suggested that pandas should be allowed to go extinct. In his statements he questioned whether it was wise to allocate so much funding towards saving an animal that’s ‘not very bright, doesn’t reproduce well in captivity, and is unfortunate enough to reside in the world’s most populous nation.’

I personally don’t think pandas should be written off, however I do think Packham made some good points and anything that gets people talking about conservation can only be a good thing.

China however does not agree and his comments have been viewed by the nation as slanderous to their most loved and iconic animal. The story made it onto the front page of almost every Chinese newspaper and let’s just say the coverage was not exactly balanced.

The US Agricultural Secretary Tom Vilsack, former governor of Iowa, spoke recently to press the importance of forest conservation and stressed his agency’s commitment to its future in the United States. His comments sought to point out that forests are crucial in supplying clean water, sheltering wildlife, and mitigating the effects of climate change. He went on to say that the sky might in fact be blue.

Vilsack is perhaps best known for his strong support of biofuels and while serving as governor was a strong supporter of Ethanol additives. I’m still not sure how I feel about biofuels as it seems a little shortsighted to take two things as vital as energy and food and combine them into one item of such importance.

Back to the issue at hand. Key among Vilsack’s policies is reversing former president Bush’s forest planning rule of 2008 and also seeking to reinstate former president Bill Clinton’s ‘Roadless Rule’ which had imposed halts on road construction, among other development, on 58 million acres of national forests.

I firmly believe that deforestation is one of the largest threats facing the world today. And it’s great to see a member of the presidential cabinet taking such a strong stance. Smokey would be proud.

Police are currently investigating a possible link between Jessica Alba and vandalism on the dark and dirty streets of Oklahoma City. As if being a criminal wouldn’t be hot enough, the alleged crime is that she defaced public property with posters of great white sharks in an attempt to raise awareness of their declining numbers.

Whether her campaign will be met with any form of success isn’t yet known, but one thing is clear… Hayden Panettiere can suck it!

In recent years there has been growing support for solar power, this support has accelerated recently thanks in large part to the President’s stimulus package. Solar power is often hailed as a clean, environmentally friend energy source. While that is mainly true, it does have its own environmental impact.

Most power generation consumes large amounts of water, and while solar power uses less water than coal or nuclear, it still does use quite a bit of water. Making things more difficult is that solar power plants are almost always located in the desert, where of course, water is harder to come by. There are alternatives to water based cooling, but they are significantly more expensive.

More than 150 applications for solar power plants are currently awaiting approval in the western deserts of the United States. The water to run that many plants simply does not exist, and the National Park service warns that any water drawdowns in the region would adversely affect the endangered electric-blue pupfish.

What I’m talking about is the financing and construction of artificial penguins nests now taking place on the beaches of Cape Town and Dyer Island.

African penguins are facing an increasingly dire situation which has seen their numbers plummet in recent years. Some colonies have witnessed declines of up to 50% since 2005. Experts fear that the entire species could die out within ten years.

The main culprit has been the mismanagement of fishing resources which has caused the supply of the penguins’ diet to dwindle. Climate change threatens to add to the damage by way of scorching days and warming of the ocean leading to an alteration in fish migratory patterns. But one of the most immediate problems is that a history of guano scraping has left the penguins without the material required to burrow, and instead are left to make their nests on the surface.

This is where the artificial penguin nests come into play. They’re intended to provide the penguins with shelter from the heat, and protection for their eggs from predatory gulls. They’ve proven popular with the penguins, boasting an 80% occupancy rate where they’ve been installed.

It’s one of the last lines of defence for the species, so if you have any money to send for your penguin brethren, please do so. I’ve already contributed what I can.

It’s long absence from a continental body has allowed an entirely unique set of animal and plant life to develop. Madagascar is now home to one of the world’s more diverse eco-systems, housing 5% of the world’s animal species.

The primary attractions are the tropical rainforests that litter the island, and the unspoiled beaches lining the coast. The best way to experience the island is to stay at one of the many eco-lodges.

The easiest way to reach Madagascar by flight is from either South Africa or France. The island was once a French colony and as such there are regular flights from Paris to its capital of Antananarivo. Despite being an island nation, Madagascar does not maintain regular passenger sea links with neighbouring nations.

In modern times Madagascar has faced its largest threat, deforestation. More than eighty-percent of the nation’s original forests are gone, and every year another one-percent disappear. Madagascar is one of the most threatened eco-systems in the world, however there is hope. Currently more money pours into Madagascar for conservation efforts than any other African nation.

One non-profit organization working in Madagascar is Azafady. They work with disadvantaged communities to improve living standards and promote positive coexistence with the the local environment.

 See the polar bears do what they do in Churchill, Manitoba
In the far north of Canada, on the western shores of the Hudson Bay lies the world’s largest Polar bear denning area. Visitors to the region take tundra buggies over the frozen ice for the chance to view polar bears in their natural habitat. Many mothers, some with young cubs, can often be seen in close proximity to the vehicles. In addition to the polar bears, Churchill is one of Canada’s best place to observe the Northern Lights.

Fall is the time to visit as it’s when the bears are returning to the ice after the summer, and it’s also the best time to observe the lights. VIA Rail (Canada’s national rail line) provides train service to Churchill from Winnipeg on a regular basis.

Polar bears around the world currently face enormous threats to their habitats. These threats come from a variety of sources not limited to but including climate change. Now whether you believe in climate change as a man made event, or even at all. There is no denying that polar bears are a species on the brink.

There are dozens of organizations working to protect the species and its habitat. The WWF comes to mind as one who uses a multi-faceted approach to conservation and is surely working tirelessly to achieve some protection for the polar bear. They also organize eco-tours to Churchill.

I was browsing the news this morning when I saw a story about the Balkan lynx being close to extinction after years of poaching. It surprised me as I thought Europe had killed all of its animals a long time ago.

The lynx’s current population in the wild is only around one-hundred animals, and the poaching shows no signs of letting up. The animal is synonymous to the Balkans so hunting one is akin to an American hunting a bald eagle. (Of course Americans did hunt bald eagles but that’s besides the point.) Scientists say if the numbers drop any lower the population will be at great risk of becoming unstable.

Sadly, these are more than likely the animals last days.
